Supporting virtual product engineering processes by integrating a neutral, lightweight and CAD-derived data format

In today’s globalized markets, effectivity in the way that product development information is communicated and transparently interpreted by a variety of divisions and disciplines in an enterprise has an essential impact on the key factors time, cost and quality. PLM is a concept that intends to cope with respective challenges. Aiming for a reduction of CAD-licensing costs and data preparation overhead within PLM-solutions, neutral, lightweight and CAD-derived data formats are becoming ever more interesting in terms of supporting various activities of virtual product development. Founded upon close cooperation with industrial partners, the thesis at hand presents a process-oriented approach to determine a requirements-portfolio that addresses such lightweight formats. By process analysis, the potential to possibly integrate these formats is identified by means of generalized use cases. For the purpose of borderlining the most significant use cases, a relevancy-portfolio is created with the help of a so called impact matrix. The following use cases are emphasized: • Lightweight format for (hybrid) Design in Context • Lightweight format for (non-hybrid) Design in Context • Lightweight format for Packaging • Lightweight format for Installation Feasibility • Lightweight format for high-end Visualization • Lightweight format for Multibody Simulation (MBS) • Lightweight format for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) • Lightweight format for (Digital Factory) Plant or Aggregate Development Design in Context is limited to CAD-system driven by the field of mechanics. Based on these use cases, 34 requirements are specified and closely looked at. By the example of JT, a correlation matrix is used to depict which containers of the data format can be utilized to satisfy the requirements. The conclusion is drawn, that a subset of the above use cases can be supported by a lightweight format as is. Other use cases require kinematical content, which these formats fall short of as of today. Respectively, a new approach to provide relevant connections within considered data formats is proposed. By using the JT Open Toolkit, the concept is prototypically validated.
